Samsung Galaxy S hits 5 million sold worldwideSamsung Galaxy S hits 5 million sold worldwide

Samsung today signaled that it had sold five million Galaxy S phones since they went on sale during the summer. The numbers have been dominated by the US, which accelerated its early sales rate to reach its second million in a month. Sales in Samsung's native South Korea also played a large role at one million total. The results are mixed for Samsung. While the American sales make the Galaxy S line one of the most popular Android variants in the country, the Korean sales suggested that interest has flattened out. Samsung had already recorded 800,000 korean Galaxy S sales in august and may have moved just a quarter of that amount in the several weeks since. The Korean iPhone 4 launch have played a significant role as local carrier KT got 300,000 pre-orders even before the mid-September debut.

American sales may improve with sustained sales of the Verizon-locked Fascinate, but the current rate is unlikely to challenge the iPhone directly as Apple already sold 8.4 million iPhones in spring and should have sold more again in the summer. Google has largely counted on collective Android figures for sales superiority rather than leaning on any one company.

Along with the new tallies, Samsung said it would expand to Japan before the end of the year and had struck deals with NTT DoCoMo to sell the Galaxy S in late October and the Galaxy Tab one month later.
